April 7, and we are in lockdown three: work from home unless you are an essential service, and art-making is not essential, according to the government. I pivot my plan from setting up gatherings and conversations and go back to the rose-coloured grounds I was working with in December. I tore one of these in half, to explore a smaller format.

On this piece was a chalk pastel spiral that I drew in the studio on the day that Mikaela Morris and I were working on her ‘portrait’ commission. She was making prints of a stylized triskele and we were talking about celtic symbols and heritage – 2019 seems like a different world to me now.

The lovely spiral and the memory of that conversation made me think of time and home. I dug in my cutlery drawer for the crazy spoon from my childhood, and approached the Sugar Bowl again.
